In this article, you will find information about the fuses of the Ford Windstar (models 1996 and 1997), including diagrams of the fuse boxes, a list of fuses and relays, their designation, and the location of the fuse blocks within the vehicle.
Checking and Replacing Fuses in Ford Windstar
Fuses and maxi-fuses (high-current fuses) protect your vehicle’s electrical system from overloading. If electrical parts in your vehicle are not working, the system may have been overloaded and caused a blown fuse. Before you replace or repair any electrical parts, check the appropriate fuses.
If you need to check a fuse, find the fuse panel for the electrical system, which is located under the instrument panel, and follow these steps:
- To remove the fuse panel cover, pull down on the fuse panel cover handle.
- On the fuse panel, find the number of the fuse you want to check.
- Use the fuse puller tool to remove the fuse.
- Check the fuse to see if it is blown. Look through the clear side of the fuse to see if the metal wire inside is separated. If it is, the fuse is blown and should be replaced with a fuse of the correct amperage rating.
- Put the fuse panel cover back on.
Even after you replace a fuse, it may continue to blow if you do not find what caused the overload. If the fuse continues to blow, have your electrical system checked.
Caution!
- Always replace a fuse with one that has the specified amperage rating. Using a fuse with a higher amperage rating can cause severe wire damage and could start a fire.
- Fuse links should only be repaired by your dealer.
- Always disconnect the battery before servicing high current fuses.
- Always replace the cover to the Power Distribution Box before reconnecting the battery or refilling fluid reservoirs.
- Ford recommends that high current fuses be replaced by a qualified technician.

Relays:
Relays are devices which receive signals from components or systems. After receiving signals, relays transfer these signals to activate or deactivate other components or systems. One relay box is located with the maxi-fuses near the battery and one is located with the fuse panel under the instrument panel.
