In this article, you will find information about the fuses of the Ford Thunderbird (models 1996 and 1997), including diagrams of the fuse boxes, a list of fuses and relays, their designation, and the location of the fuse blocks within the vehicle.
Checking and Replacing Fuses in Ford Thunderbird
Fuses (conventional and high current) and circuit breakers protect your vehicle’s wiring system from overloading. If electrical parts in your vehicle are not working, the system may have been overloaded and blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Before you replace or repair any electrical parts, check the appropriate fuses (conventional and high current) or circuit breakers. If a fuse blows or a circuit breaker opens a circuit, all the parts of your vehicle that use that circuit will not work.
If you need to check a fuse, follow these steps:
- Find the fuse panel underneath the instrument panel, to the left of the steering column.
- Check the fuse to see if it is blown. Look through the clear side of the fuse to see if the metal wire inside is separated. If it is, the fuse should be replaced.
- Replace the fuse with one that has the right amperage rating. To remove the fuse use the pulling tool attached to the inside cover of the fuse panel. There are also four spare fuses attached to the cover.
- Close the cover.
Even after you replace a fuse, it may continue to blow if you do not find what caused the overload. If the fuse continues to blow, have your electrical system checked.
Caution!
- Always replace a fuse with one that has the specified amperage rating. Using a fuse with a higher amperage rating can cause severe wire damage and could start a fire.
- Always disconnect the battery before servicing high current fuses.

High Current Fuse Panel:
High current fuses are circuit protectors that are part of the wiring harness for some electrical equipment. These, like fuses, open when the circuit load exceeds their amperage rating. High current fuses may be purchased from your Ford.
The high current fuse panel is located in the engine compartment on the left-hand fender apron. Ford recommends that high current fuses be replaced by a qualified technician.
